Palenque Head
This piece is handcrafted from obsidian with turquoise inlay. History: The original is one of the most famous sculptures found as a part an offering in a crypt at Palenque (the Temple of the Inscriptions) in the Mexican state of Chiapas. The stone carving is thought to be a depiction of an important personage buried there. Artists use the distinctive headdress and overall look to create different versions on this theme.
