History: The Aztec calendar (a close version of the older Mayan calendar) also known as the sun stone is probably the best-known monument of Mexico. The original measures 12 feet in diameter, is 4 feet thick and weighs 24.5 tons. It was sculpted in 1479 and placed in the Great Temple (Templo Mayor) the centerpiece of the Aztec Capitol Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City). Because symbols of the 20-day Aztec calendar circle it, the disc was misidentified as a calendar after its discovery in 1790 beneath Mexico City's central square where it was buried to hide it from the invading Spaniards. Today however, scholars recognize that the stone was no mere calendar. The glyphs and icons adorning it were also a road map of the Aztecs' destiny, indicating not only when the world was supposed to have begun, but also when it would end (December 21st 2012).
